What is Navya, and what does it do?

Deciding which cancer treatment is right for you can be a confusing and complex process. But it doesn’t have to be. Navya’s goal is to provide clarity by empowering you with evidence based, expert treatment recommendations.

Our expert system is as simple to use as it is powerful. After uploading your medical reports to our portal, we synthesize them and pass them along to world leading oncologists at Tata Memorial Centre and National Cancer Grid. After our experts have reviewed your case, we electronically deliver a report written in language you can understand. Navya also saves precious time. From when your medical reports are sent for expert review, Navya decisions are finalized in just 1-3 days.

Some patients have preferences that they would like to guide their care, such as a desire to avoid a certain type of surgery. Others’ circumstances impact the kinds of therapy they can receive, such as a patient who cannot afford to travel to the nearest radiation center. Our expert opinion reports take your unique preferences and circumstances into account to empower you with the treatment option that is right for you.

We believe that expertise in cancer care should be available to every cancer patient, no matter their location, socioeconomic status, or ability to research medical information. Quick access to evidence-based expertise greatly improves treatment outcomes. Our goal is to make that information as accessible as possible.

I’ve seen many online services which connect patients to doctors. How is Navya different, and why should I use it?

There are many online services in healthcare, which can be confusing. Some are informational. Others allow patients to locate caregivers. Telemedicine services enable patients to make audio or video calls to a doctor. Given the complexities of cancer treatment planning, where several oncologists need to collaborate to review numerous, detailed reports, we believe that telemedicine solutions aren’t enough. Navya is different.

Navya offers a complete solution which provides expert treatment recommendations tailored to your specific case.

Navya provides this unique service by replicating the process found in the best tertiary care centers in the world, like Tata Memorial Centre. In these centers, trained clinical professionals spend time reviewing medical reports before they present a case summary to a multidisciplinary tumor board for a treatment decision. Since experts’ time is scarce, these professionals must synthesize a patient’s history and medical reports into a concise format so that experts can review them quickly. The experts then draw upon their experience to recommend the best treatment plan. Such a treatment plan follows published evidence and is informed by the experience of the hundreds of cases experts see every week.

Navya is the only service which replicates this process in an efficient way that makes experts accessible to you. After you submit your reports, patient advocates will reach out to understand your complete medical history. Next, trained clinical analysts extract the relevant information from your medical reports. The Navya decision engine then determines the most applicable evidence based treatment options for your case.

Then, your medical history and the decision engine’s treatment suggestions are presented to all of the experts relevant to your case. Because Navya presents all of the important information from your case in a highly structured format, experts can review it quickly, accurately, and efficiently. Navya is the only service which allows experts to collaborate remotely through quick, asynchronous communication. This allows them to work together as an online tumor board to find which treatment option is best for you. Navya’s system combines these opinions, and presents them in a way that is easy for you to understand and easy for your treating oncologist to apply.

All this is typically done within 1-3 days. Only Navya offers an online service which provides personally tailored expert treatment recommendations for patients with cancer.

Who is eligible to seek an expert opinion?

Patients, caregivers, and treating oncologists can use Navya. To determine when you should reach out to Navya, see the next question.

If I or someone in my care has been diagnosed with cancer, when should I reach out to Navya?

Cancer treatment is a process which can last for months or years. Every decision you face, from initial diagnosis onwards, requires expertise. If you have been recently diagnosed with cancer and haven't decided on a treatment plan, or if you are already receiving therapy and want to know what to do at your next decision point, Navya can help. Knowing whether or not to continue aggressive treatment, for example, is an important decision. Many patients and their families want the peace of mind of an expert second opinion; Navya makes this accessible.

Especially in complex or advanced-stage cases, there is limited expertise available when determining the path forward. This is the most common scenario in which many patients reach out to us. Since Navya allows the world’s premier cancer experts to collaborate on a case, and our experience engine compiles data from numerous rare and complex cases, we are well equipped to offer recommendations.

Many cancers are curable if diagnosed early and treated appropriately. The first treatment a patient undergoes thus offers the best chance of a positive outcome. Treatment decisions are also life changing clinically and financially. For this reason, everyone faced with a treatment decision should get the opinion of an impartial expert before beginning. Navya offers a way for you to quickly receive an expert opinion tailored to your needs and preferences.

What questions can Navya help me answer about my case?

The core question that Navya’s expert opinion service answers is “What is the best treatment recommendation for my specific case?” In our patient reports, the answer is explained in a way that both you and your treating physician can understand and apply. It includes the details of which therapies to follow (such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or immunotherapy) as well as further details which can include specific drugs, dosages, and frequencies of response assessment. Our reports follow internationally accepted guidelines of cancer care.

Patients sometimes ask for therapies that align with their preferences. Some desire to avoid surgery or prefer more affordable options. Navya informs experts of patient preferences, and experts construct a treatment plan that keeps these preferences in mind. Reports sometimes include decision trees, which describe the pros and cons of different paths forward. For example, a decision tree might recommend surgery, but might suggest chemotherapy if the patient refuses surgery or if the treating physician feels that the patient is not fit enough.

You also have the option to ask additional questions, which you might not have time to ask a doctor in a brief consultation. Some examples of questions our patients have asked in the past involve recommended dietary choices, expected side effects, or effects on fertility. Patients also often ask us for definitions of cancer related terms.

Are there any questions Navya can’t answer?

We are an empathetic, data-driven patient service. We are committed to answering every question we can clearly and compassionately.

However, if you have questions about how to manage acute symptoms that arise during treatment, such as an infection that occurs during chemotherapy, those are best addressed by your treating oncologist. Certain precision surgeries and radiation therapies may also require additional in-person physical evaluations before moving forward.

Questions about prognosis or life expectancy require professionals to counsel the patient and their family. Answers to these questions are best delivered in person by treating oncologists, since it isn’t possible to replicate the nuances of these conversations through an online service.

What is Navya’s goal?

Navya’s goal is to empower cancer patients, their caregivers, and their treating physicians with expert information they can understand and act upon.

We have been in your shoes, and know how nerve wracking and confusing cancer treatment decisions can be. We know how hard it is to find experts, and have experienced the struggles of learning a new vocabulary to communicate with them. This is why we built the expert opinion system.

Our goal is to use whatever resources we have to help you find the information you need. We are your advocate.

I’m not sure how I feel about getting an online opinion. How is it different from an in-person visit?

An online opinion offers a number of advantages over an in-person consultation, although there are some important differences as well. Here are some of the advantages:

  • You won’t have to travel or wait in line to meet an expert. Normally, patients encounter significant wait times when trying to make an appointment with a senior oncologist. Through Navya, the same oncologists review your case in 1-3 days, and you don’t need to stress about travel or wait times.
  • Many cases require the input of multiple oncologists, especially if multiple treatments or organs are involved. However, getting access to even one expert can be difficult. Getting a case reviewed by a tumour board of multiple experts is even tougher, since they are available only at the best tertiary care centers in the world. Navya allows experts to collaborate remotely on your case through technology, so you can receive a complete treatment opinion without the time and stress of waiting for a tumor board to get back to you.
  • You can take your treatment plan to your doctor, and commence treatment at a hospital nearer to your home, so the logistics of receiving treatment become easier.
  • There are differences to be aware of. Because Navya doesn’t assess you in person, there are some questions we can’t answer . However, you can be confident that Navya’s opinion is trustworthy . We believe the benefits of our online opinion service far outweigh the drawbacks.

    Why can I trust Navya?

Navya treatment decisions are accurate, and we have the data to back it up. A retrospective trial of Navya’s Evidence Engine and Guidelines Engine revealed that Navya Expert System decisions are 98.6% concordant with the decisions of tumor boards and expert oncologists at Tata Memorial Centre.

Navya’s opinions are strictly fact-based and unbiased. We do not receive any incentives for recommending certain treatments, and gain nothing that depends on which treatment you select. Our goal is simply to provide the expert information you need to clarify your treatment decisions.

Navya also has experience to back it up. Since 2014, when our service was launched, we have helped tens of thousands of people from 68 countries. In many of these cases, patients changed a suboptimal treatment to one that offered better outcomes based on the expert opinion. In other cases, experts helped patients avoid treatments that were unnecessarily expensive. In others, any potential benefit of therapy would be far outweighed by its side effects. Because Navya is unbiased, we can prioritize patients’ quality of life, especially in cases where evidence does not clearly indicate further aggressive therapies will improve longevity.

If you experience peace of mind and improved quality of life after using our service, we have been successful.

Can I consider Navya’s expert opinion service the final authority on my treatment plan? Can Navya replace my doctor?

Navya does not replace your doctor. We work alongside your treating oncologist, who is the final authority on your treatment plan. In fact, we strongly recommend that you share your Expert Opinion Report with your treating oncologist when you are faced with a treatment decision.

Because treatment planning is a collaborative exercise, local treating oncologists often consult organ specific specialists at tertiary care centers. Since tertiary centers are overcrowded, we provide you and your treating oncologist the means to access these specialists. Treating oncologists tend to look favorably on the opinion provided by specialists at TMC and NCG, and consider it when deciding your next course of treatment.

If Navya does not write prescriptions or replace my doctor, how does Navya fit into my treatment planning? How or why can my treating oncologist use Navya?

Cancer treatment planning is complex. Treating oncologists routinely collaborate with specialists in the affected organ or necessary treatment modality. Oncologists refer patients to tertiary centers for specialist opinions, and patients seek second opinions to provide additional clarity in the treatment they receive locally.

Navya provides a new way to bridge patients and their treating oncologists with other specialist oncologists at tertiary centers. It provides you and your treating oncologist the benefits of a tumor board, without the difficulty of traveling to a tertiary care center.

Why should I use Navya’s online expert opinion if I already have the opinion of doctors at my local center?

When faced with cancer, the best way to ensure a positive outcome is to follow evidence based treatment guidance from the most experienced professionals in the field. Cancer treatment is collaborative. When deciding which treatment to recommend, it is common practice for local treating oncologists to consult their specialist colleagues at tertiary care centers, especially in complex cases and cases which require organ specific expertise.

The expert oncologists on Navya’s panel treat hundreds of cases every week at tertiary care centers. However, since there are only a handful of expert oncologists working in a given organ and treatment modality, treating oncologists at local centers often find it difficult to collaborate with them. Navya’s expert system provides a way for patients and treating oncologists to communicate with specialists at tertiary centers.

By facilitating this collaboration, Navya’s expert system ensures that you receive a personalized treatment plan that follows internationally accepted guidelines. You can take comfort in the fact that your case has been reviewed by some of the most experienced cancer experts in the world.

What if my case turns out to be complex, and requires the input of multiple experts?

This is a very common situation in cancer treatment planning. Often, a case will require cancer experts to recommend multiple types of treatments (such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy), each of which requires a different expert’s input. In others, multiple organs are affected or organ specific expertise is needed. Ideally, multiple experts would collaborate to determine the most applicable treatment plan as part of a tumor board. In practice, getting access to even one expert can be difficult. Getting a case reviewed by a tumour board is even tougher, since they are available only in the best tertiary care centers in the world.

Navya solves this problem through technology. Cases are sent to all relevant experts, who can collaborate online. The Navya Expert system considers all of their opinions when synthesising the best treatment plan for the patient. A process that can often take weeks in hospitals is completed within minutes through Navya.

Which reports should I upload? How do I know if all of the reports I have uploaded have been received, and that I have uploaded everything the experts need?

In general, we ask you to submit all the medical reports that you have related to your case. This typically includes doctor’s notes and biopsy and radiology reports. For more information about which reports are useful, please click here.

Your patient advocate will guide you throughout the process and advise you if you are unsure whether a particular test report is necessary. If we require more reports or information than you have uploaded, your patient advocate will reach out to you.

What should I do with my DICOM images and reviews?

DICOM reviews are radiological reviews of MRI, CT, or PET CT scans. They are essential for surgical and radiation opinions. If we need any of these from you, we will send you an email detailing the complete process of how to upload them. If you encounter any issues with the upload, or have questions about the status of your DICOM report, please reach out to your patient advocate.

How do I check the status of my case?

We email status updates to you at each step of the process. For example, you will receive an email when your case is sent to the experts, and when your expert opinion report is available to view. Please closely monitor your registered email.

If you have any questions about the status of your case, you may reach out to us on your profile at navya.care, or email us at reports@navya.care.

How long does it take to get my expert opinion report, and how do I access it?

After you have uploaded all of your necessary medical reports, your Expert Opinion Report will be available in 1 to 3 days. You will receive an email with the report attached, and can also access it through the same online portal at navya.care where you uploaded your reports. In the rare event that experts relevant to your case are traveling or away and your case is delayed, we will let you know via email.

What if I have follow up questions on my expert opinion report, or want to add additional information after a case is sent to processing?

If you have follow-up questions or requests for clarification on the Expert Opinion Report, Navya is happy to address them without an additional fee as long as your case does not need to be resent to an expert. Please post your questions to your profile on navya.care, or email us at reports@navya.care. If you have just completed a treatment and have additional medical reports and questions, you may upload them through the portal and start a new case on your existing account to be reviewed by the experts.

If a follow-up requires new opinions from the experts, the case will need to be reprocessed as a new case with the associated processing fee. We request an additional processing fee when:

  • New information is provided about the patient’s case after the expert opinion report from Navya was made available, and this information needs to be sent to experts for an opinion.
  • After the expert opinion report has been made available, the patient has undergone therapy (such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy) and patients are seeking further advice for the next course of action.
  • The patient has undergone additional tests after the expert opinion report was made available by Navya, and wishes for that information to be shared with the experts for additional remarks or opinions.
